Gravenhurst is known as the Gateway to Muskoka because of its proximity to the GTA. The lakes, forests and rocky shorelines have drawn people to cottage country for more than 150 years. Back in the day, those looking to get away from the city would take the train down to Muskoka Wharf (located on the southern tip of Lake Muskoka), then wait for the steamship to take them to their summer escapes. Quite the journey!
Today, cottage goers now jump onto the 400 heading North from the GTA, veering off at the highway 11 split. If you're lucky enough to not get caught in traffic, the drive from Toronto is a mere 90 minutes...fingers crossed!
This year-round town, and surrounding communities Killworthy and Severn Bridge, offer tourists and permanent residents a busy schedule of weekend events and festivals beginning in late spring and continuing well into the fall.
If you're a beach lover like myself, you'll be happy to know that the Gravenhurst area boasts many great sandy beaches. Gull Lake, Rotary Park and Muskoka Beach with long wide, sandy shores are worth a visit.
Gravenhurst is also known for its historic buildings, art galleries, small shops and breweries, making it more than just a sleepy cottage town.
Enjoy live music on a Sunday night at Barge at Gull Lake or take a walk along the scenic shoreline boardwalk, there is so much to explore in the Gravenhurst area.
Dont forget a slew of events and festivals, including the Sawdust City Music Festival, The Dockside Festival of the Arts and the Craft Beer Festival, Gravenhurst offers new experiences with every visit.
In terms of real estate, tear down/entry level cottages can be found on the smaller lakes and river in this region for about 600-700k. These cottages are typically only used in the summer and would need to be winterized if you plan on using them during the colder months. Keep in mind, these cottages may also be located on seasonal access roads which could be an issue if you're planning on using the property once the snow flies.
If you're looking for a more turnkey cottage on a sought-after lake in the area, your budget will have to increase to $900k-1M. Cottages closer to town can demand a higher price tag than those located further out. Lake Muskoka (part of the Big 3), cottages are priced closer to 2M. Keep in mind that lakefront it usually more desirable in terms of resale than riverfront properties.
